Evans probably describes the value object best by saying, When you care only about the attributes of an element of the model, classify it as a value object. I like to think of a value object as an object that cannot exist on its own that is to say, an object that has no identity by itself. For all intents and purposes, value objects are the parasites of your model because there is no reason for their existence except to describe and associate themselves with your entities. For example, to continue with the automobile referenced in the preceding Entities section, your automobile has attributes including color, tint, and stereo type. Each of these items cannot exist by itself in the system that is, each of these attributes lacks identity. Thus, a value object is typically an immutable object with no identity, containing values used to describe entities. Figure 2-3 illustrates our automobile example. From a design standpoint, several techniques exist to build value objects into your model. The purists say that you should create a separate class for each value object in the system. I don t think that there is one correct way to create value objects. However, 8 demonstrates my preferred method, which uses generics, reflection, and caching. The important thing to remember about value objects is that in 99.9 percent of cases, you shouldn t assign or track their identity or you will likely impair system performance. Additionally, never lose sight that these objects are used to describe aspects of the system and so they should, in most cases, be treated as immutable.

JavaScript gives us the typeof operator for detecting the types of our values But as we saw earlier in this chapter, the native typeof operator leaves a lot to be desired Its replacement from the MooTools type system, the typeOf function, does a better job at detecting the types of values as well as differentiating among the actual types of objects Unlike the instanceOf function, though, which only depends on the constructor and $constructor properties of the value passed, the typeOf operator uses a couple of different ways to properly detect the type of a value At the top of the list is the use of type objects to pass special functions to their instances, which are called family methods.

According to Merriam-Webster Online, an aggregate is formed by the collection of units or particles into a body, mass, or amount Aggregates, in terms of the domain model, are just that: a logical grouping of entities and value objects into a collection The reason for aggregation in your model is that complex relationships can lead to data inconsistencies in your application and database This concept is simple: the more moving parts in your model, the more likely you are to end up with problems A case in point is the cleanup of orphaned data and objects Say, for example, that you have an account record in your database If you delete the account, you can use a cascading delete to ensure that you don t have any orphaned data hanging out in other related tables.

The standard acknowledges the use of partial type where there is a requirement to split a type over multiple files but cautions that once the type is compiled, it cannot be extended.

A family method is a special private method that s added by the Type constructor to the prototype of the type object that s used to return the type of the object It is a very simple function that simply returns the lowercase name of the type as a string When creating new Type('Array', Array), for example, the Type constructor adds a new method called $family to Arrayprototype, and this new method simply returns the lowercase equivalent of the name passed to the Type constructor Thus, Arrayprototype$family returns array when invoked This family method is then invoked by the typeOf function to return the type of the value Because the family method is added to the prototype of the type object directly, all instances of the type will therefore inherit the same family method.
